⚔ Pyre ⚔

I wrote Pyre as an assignement for school a few years back and though I only have the plot of the story and a few characters, it is still dear to my heart and I wanted to share it. The synopsis can be found below and I'll link artwork and character profile I've done for this story. I don't think I'll ever continue this story but I still wanted to include it.

CHARACTERS

I'll add the characters later :)

SYNOPSIS

It’s been three years already since Jazz discovered that she had fire powers, and two since she became the superhero Pyre. She’s still going strong and cops now know that she’s not the enemy, which is good because it means that they no longer shoot at her which allows her to save people in peace.

With the beginning of Australia’s fire season, she starts an alliance with the NSW RFS (New South Wales Rural Fire Service) and now works as an assistant to help put out and control bushfires. She’s never been more glad to have powers but sometimes she thinks that water would have been more useful for her current situation. Nonetheless she has a good grasp on what she can and cannot do with her powers and it allows her to be a precious help to the local fireys.[1]

When she’s not acting as a superhero, she volunteers with her friend Paige at one of the local associations to protect Australia’s fauna and flora. It is a small association, with only about a hundred people, taking into account the permanent staff, but they make do. With them, Jazz creates flyers to promote ecological gestures, goes to protests where she meets new people and discusses the future of the planet. They’re trying to shed light on the danger wildlife is in, and how disastrous it would be for the ecosystem if one more species was to disappear. In the last 3 months, they've started to gain more members, at first slowly, and then by groups of a hundred and more people in one sitting. If you asked Paige, she’d say the turning point in the growth of their association was when Jazz did a speech as Pyre. Indeed, Pyre had been a public figure in the media for a long time. At first, the news were wary of her and reacted accordingly, but as people started to figure out she wasn’t dangerous for them it began to be harder for the media to demonize her. They did try but people are understandably dubious when you try to sell them a nice young woman holding a baby koala and smiling to toddlers as the devil in person. Pyre’s speech also induced a lot more means for the association to make itself heard and thus improving its actions rapidly.

As a matter of fact, for a few months already, they’ve been planning another rally to protest against the destruction of the fauna and flora caused by bushfires as well as against the lack of concrete measures from the government. They are hoping to convince their Prime Minister that climate change is real and a big issue for the ecosystem, but he is a known climate skeptic so it isn’t an easy feat. Jazz has already decided that she’ll be going to the protest as Pyre so it gets more attention from the media.

There’s just one tiny problem. In the past weeks, some of their meeting places have been burned down, their flyers are being torn off walls and a deep smell of gasoline saturates the air. As Ian Fleming said “One time is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.” The cops are on it but so are Jazz and Paige, and they have quite the network. Jazz knows people and with that she hopes to gather enough information to stop the culprit.

The thing is, it’s not turning out great, her friends often clash with each other, her sister is skipping school and Jazz is being watched. Honestly, she’s pretty sure everything is linked, but that might be because she’s running on six cups of coffee and two hours of sleep per day. Her friends tell her she’s paranoid however she felt eyes on her back multiple times and she doesn’t think she could have imagined that. She has to take action, if her stalker learns about her secret identity it will put all her family and friends in danger and that’s not something she’ll allow. Jazz must now juggle between school, firefighting, superhero business, climate change protest, keeping her sister safe and a stalker! Clearly, it’ll be a miracle if she’s still sane at the end of the year. Thank God she has Paige.
